Resident Benefits

All residents are members of the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) and receive the same salary as the medical residents. Post Graduate Year (PGY) levels are defined as a year of service in a residency training program which is certified as having been completed by the appropriate hospital authority.

 

Benefits are determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between NYC Health + Hospitals and the Committee of Interns and Residents, who represent all housestaff. Full details of benefits and a copy of the current contract are available on the CIR website.

The following are the current benefits and will be updated when a new Collective Bargaining Agreement is put into effect.

Salary

Salary is paid biweekly based on highest PGY level completed. Salary is prorated for any resident or fellow not enrolled full time.

Meal Stipend

Residents and fellows receive an additional stipend of $3800 for food allowance added to their paycheck.

​

Vacation

Residents and fellows receive 20 days paid vacation as well as 11 federal/state holidays per year.

​

Health Insurance

All residents and fellows receive full medical, prescription drug, supplement health, dental, and vision coverage. Coverage is also available for spouses and children, at an additional cost.

​

Continuing Learn Program (CLP)

Residents and fellows can receive up to $1500 for reimbursement of expenses related to approved registration and travel for conference or continuing education, including online courses and board review courses.

​

Professional Education Plan

Residents and fellows can receive up to $750 per year, related to approved education expenses for equipment, journals, professional dues, license application, board exam fees and more.

​

Child Care Reimbursement

Residents and fellows can receive up to a $5000 reimbursement for child care expenses, each calendar year.

​

CIR Legal Services

Residents and fellows are eligible for a variety of legal services through CIR. A discounted education loan consultation is available, in-person or via telephone, for analysis of education loans to maximize education loan savings.

​

Residents and fellows are also eligible for discounted employment contract review, plus a $200 stipend toward contract review. A physician contract attorney is available to review any employment contract in 15 states and Washington, DC.

​

Additional legal services are available at discounted rates through CIR.
